Legal Assistance of Windsor:  Successful summer candidates will be required to enroll in LAW  for an academic term as a full time student, or in 2 academic terms as a part time student, in addition to taking the Clinical Seminar course.

 

           

Community Legal Aid

 

A poverty law clinic offering legal services to University of Windsor students and low income residents of Windsor and Essex County. With the supervision of full time review lawyers, volunteer law students provide legal advice and represent clients in the following practice areas:

 

·       Residential tenancy matters

·       Criminal Code offences (Summary Conviction Offences where there is no possibility of imprisonment)

·       Regulatory offences

·       Employment Law

·       Academic Affairs

·       Small Claims Court

 

Summer Employment:

 

Each year Community Legal Aid hires approximately 10 Law students to work at the Clinic during the summer.  Under the supervision of Review Counsel, Law students take carriage of a file from the initial intake to the resolution of the matter.  This includes correspondence and negotiation with opposing parties, drafting applications, analysis of disclosure documentation, preparation of legal arguments, client management, and litigation before the Criminal and Provincial Offences Courts, Small Claims Court, and the Landlord and Tenant Board.  Following completion of their summer employment, students are committed to act as group leaders for the following academic year.  Group leaders collaborate with Review Counsel to manage the training and casework supervision of student caseworkers and litigators.

 

 

 

 

Rate of Pay: $600.00 a week

Vacation: 1 week paid vacation

Term of employment: May to end of August

 

 

Legal Assistance of Windsor

 

A downtown community poverty law clinic offering law and social work services to low income residents of Windsor and Essex County.

 

Areas of Practice:

 

·       Social Benefits Law – OntarioWorks, Ontario Disability Support Program

·       Employment Law – Employment Insurance

·       Landlord/Tenant Law

·       Refugee and Immigration

·       Criminal Injuries Compensation

 

Summer Employment:

 

Each year, Legal Assistance of Windsor hires approximately 15 Law students to work at the Clinic during the summer.  Students hired for a summer are required to enroll in the Clinic Seminar course in an academic term and return for an academic term as a full time student or return for two academic terms as a part time student in addition to enrolling in the clinic advocacy course. 

 

Under the supervision of Staff Lawyers, Law students conduct file work from the initial intake to the resolution of the matter.  This includes correspondence and negotiation with opposing parties, explaining and drafting applications with clients, analysis of medical documentation, preparation of legal arguments and representation before the Social Benefits Tribunal, the Landlord and Tenant Board, and Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.  Students also have the opportunity to be involved in systemic advocacy through community outreach and law reform initiatives in the areas of social assistance reform, income security, human trafficking, and landlord/tenant. We also have a special advocacy project involving the provision of legal information to persons living with intellectual disabilities.

 

 

Rate of Pay: $600.00 a week
